Day trips from Algiers: Roman Tipaza, beaches and Mediterranean wonders

Tipaza, the Pompeii of Africa

Just 60 kilometres west of Algiers, Tipaza is a Roman archaeological site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nicknamed the Pompeii of Africa, this ancient Roman colony offers a striking spectacle: temples, basilicas, a theatre and necropolises stand facing the Mediterranean. Albert Camus found inspiration here for his essay Nuptials at Tipasa. Walking along the ruins overlooking the turquoise sea is one of the most memorable experiences of a stay in Algeria.

The Royal Mausoleum and Mount Chenoua

Seventy kilometres from Algiers, the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania (Tomb of Juba II and Cleopatra Selene) has intrigued visitors since antiquity. This Numidian royal mausoleum, cylindrical in shape and topped with a cone, has dominated the landscape for over 2,000 years. Nearby, Mount Chenoua offers hikes with breathtaking views of the coastline. The coastal road between Algiers and Tipaza, running along cliffs and coves, is itself a spectacular sight.

Beaches near Algiers

Beach lovers are well catered for. The resort of Sidi Fredj, just 30 minutes from central Algiers, offers equipped beaches, a marina and seafood restaurants. Moretti Beach and Palm Beach, both easily accessible, provide crystal-clear waters. For wilder coves, the Bou Ismael corniche and Zeralda beaches appeal to travellers seeking tranquillity. The bathing season runs from June to October.

Notre-Dame d'Afrique and the Jardin d'Essai

Back in Algiers, two sites deserve a visit. The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique, perched on the heights of the city, offers a magnificent view of the bay and houses a unique inscription: Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims. The Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, one of the finest botanical gardens in the Mediterranean, brings together over 3,000 plant species across 32 hectares. From Houari Boumediene Airport, all these sites are accessible in under an hour, making Algiers an ideal base for exploring the Algerian coast.
